In Judea’s Plain:
Judea is part of Israel that anciently included the city of Jerusalem and the surrounding hills and valleys. It was in those plains that the shepherds kept watch over their flocks at night, which was a common occupation during the time of the Lord Jesus’ birth.
- Judea was a province of the Roman Empire under the jurisdiction of King Herod. It is within the Judea province that the Christmas story begins when Joseph and Mary began their trek into Judea in order to be taxed.
- They traveled from Nazareth to Bethlehem – most likely with caravans to avoid being robbed – along a dusty road that that elevated and declined for nearly 94 miles (~160km).

Walking Bethlehem’s Streets:
Bethlehem is a small city situated in the Judean Hills about 5 miles south of Jerusalem. In biblical times, it was an insignificant city except for one famous occurrence – it was the birthplace of King David – Israel’s most favored son.
- Joseph and Mary made their trek to Bethlehem for two reason. 1) the Roman government enacted a census for counted; and 2) based on the census, the subjects were to be taxed.
- Since Joseph was part of the Judean tribe coming out of Bethlehem (his lineage dates back to King David), he made the trip along with many other pilgrims of similar lineage to Bethlehem.

No Room In The Inn:
After traveling for several days alone a dusty road, Joseph and Mary desperately sought a place to rest, clean up and to provide Mary comfort and needs since her time was near. Unfortunately upon their arrival, Bethlehem was heavily populated with pilgrims making the same trek for census and tax purposes – thus, there was no room within the Inn.
- Inns during biblical times were simple court yards where travelers can tie up and provide feed for their animals. You had to find a spot within the courtyard to lay out your space and bed. Some inns provided water and food for eating.
- Since the Inns were full, Joseph and Mary were directed to a manger – either by the Inns keeper or another person – where Joseph and Mary can find rest. Mangers were stalls either constructed close by the Inn or possibly enclosed within caves that were prevalent in the Bethlehem hills. It is within these mangers where animal were kept with a feeding and watering troughs.

Mary Gives Birth:
The time between arriving in Bethlehem and the giving birth is not known. It could have been sudden or within a day or so. All we know is that shortly settling in the manger that Mary gave birth and wrapped the babe in swaddling clothes and placed Him into a trough.
- Meanwhile, out in the Judean Hills were Shepherds, watching their flocks by night. Suddenly, an Angel appeared and extended glad tidings for all people, saying:
- For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.
- And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

Time To Rest:
It soon becomes a busy evening for Mary after giving birth. Joseph is likely cleaning up and perhaps finding food for the evening, if he hadn’t previously. There are noises and commotion outside of the manger as travelers celebrate their reunion with friends and family.
- And then later, shepherds pay a visit to the manager to view and honor the new born King. How long that visit was – or how many participated, we cannot say. What happened after their visit, we can only speculate. It’s possible they shared the glad tidings to others who may may have made a visit to the manager as well.
- What we can say is that after some time, whether short or long, the visitations ended, the noise and bustling of the city quieted down, and perhaps Joseph found time to sleep upon the hay after a hard day of travel.
- It was now time just for Mary and the Baby to be alone – together, just –
- “ virgin, mother and child Holy infant, so tender and mild. Silent Night, Holy night.”
