The Star-Spangled Banner

  • We thought it would be nice – for flag day – to honor our flag as how Francis Scott Key did back in 1814.
  • The War of 1812 has been going on for two years – a war between the newly established United States and Britain over territory and seaman impressment:
    HISTORY: War of 1812
  • It was in the early morning of September 14, 1814 when Francis Scott Key was inspired to compose a poem after watching through the night from a nearby truce ship the British bombardment of Ft. McHenry:
    INFO: Ft. McHenry National Park
  • The fort – which protected Baltimore harbor – was pounded by British ships for nearly 24 hours – it was through the night with the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, that the flag was still there:
INFO: original lyrics written by Key
  • So as we honor Flag Day – keep in mind the wonderful lyrics of a lawyer who understood what the flag represented that morning – it was shortly thereafter when the British ran out of ammunition and withdrew their bombardment- Baltimore was saved:
INFO: in commemoration of Flag Day
