Houses with hardie board

Notes:

  • Hardie board is also called cement-board siding. It is made up of wood cellulose and cement to create a more permanent installation than you’ll find with vinyl siding. It is not unheard of to have a 50-year warranty on Hardie board due to its tough construction.
  • Hardie board requires a carbide drill bit as opposed to a steel drill bit for drilling. Because of the combination of wood cellulose and cement, splits can occur in the Hardie board if the correct bits are not used.
  • Metal brackets are the most common way of supporting a flower box mounted on Hardie board. Brackets should be leveled and have three screw holes above the horizontal bracket piece. The top and bottom hole will take 2 1/2″ screws, while the middle hole needs to be 3″ in length.
  • Although this may seem sufficient for bearing a load, it is imperative that each screw goes into a stud. There should be a sill plate below the window and beams supporting the window, but note that sometimes beams can be off center.

Houses made with brick

Notes:

  • Brick can offer great support for flower boxes. However, without the right tools and materials, a project can end in failure. A hammer drill is necessary to drill through masonry. It provides the right percussion on the masonry bits to make an adequate hole.
  • Four L-shaped brackets should be used for added support. With the correct drill and masonry bits, it can still be a bit of a chore if you are not familiar with masonry.
  • To begin, place a piece of masking tape over the drill bit. Drill as evenly as possible. Place the lag shield and lag bolt into the hole. Check constantly to ensure your bracket has not moved from the original marking. Once the holes have been correctly drilled, the brackets can be hung.

Houses lined with stucco

Notes:

  • Stucco is a type of masonry, but it’s not as hard to penetrate as brick. It is also not recommended to hang heavy boxes on it because of its lack of structural integrity. Some houses are covered in a stucco-looking substance that is not stucco at all, but instead is a foam-based board that has been sprayed.
  • Know the difference. A hammer drill is still necessary, as are 1/4″ plastic anchors and exterior-grade screws, 1 1/4″ long. You can also use masonry screws. Try to find a support beam for best results.

Houses with vinyl or aluminum siding

Notes:

  • Vinyl and aluminum siding can be tricky when it comes to hanging flower boxes. The best way to be assured that your siding is not going to be damaged from the weight of a flower box is to use vinyl siding hooks. While the weight limit on most is 15 pounds, you will not fear tearing up your siding.
  • Vinyl and aluminum siding hooks attach to the actual siding pieces. This may sound like a quick fix to keeping your siding intact, but remember that the hooks will not support heavy dirt.
  • The only way that you will be able to mount a load-bearing window box on siding is to use the method described for Hardie board. You will probably end up with some dirt and discoloration around the metal brackets and box, but you will have a sturdy place to grow your flowers.

Other ways

Notes:

  • There are other ways to support your window planter boxes, such as wooden rails that can be made to balance the weight of a heavy box. However, the most trusted method is to locate studs and use anchors to support the screws:
