• Today we honor Martin Luther King Jr. – an American icon who led the civil rights movement in the 1950’s and 1960’s. It was through his leadership – speaches – and for the rule of law that changed many of the anti-discrimination laws that were prevalent throughout most of the Southern States of America:

• One of his most famous speeches was during the march on Washington for jobs and freedom in August 1963. “I Have a Dream …”, captured the hope and change of American society “… that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character“:

• Martin Luther King’s non-violent, peaceful protests against segregation won him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, the youngest man ever to receive the award in Nobel history:

• Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated in Memphis Tennessee. MLK was in Memphis in 1968 to support the sanitation strike. He was coming out of his Motel room to go to dinner when he was hit while standing on the second level floor of the motel:

• Martin Luther King Day: following King’s death, a movement arose within unions, musicians and politicians to designate an official federal holiday in his honor. It wasn’t until 1983 when it was officially voted upon and signed into law for the 3rd Monday of January as Martin Luther King Day.
