1) Pilot or ignition problems

Notes:

  • Ignition problems are usually caused by a variety of issues. It could be the result of a dirty pilot, a defective flame sensor, or malfunctioning burners. Sometimes, the issue is wear and tear of an ignition component or a problem with the gas supply.
  • Replacing the problematic part can immediately solve the issue. If you aren’t sure how to go about it, consider calling a trained service technician.

2) Clogged drain

Notes:

  • Clogged drains are also among the common issues with HVAC. A clogged drain affects the overall functionality of the system, and you’ll notice that you aren’t getting enough cold air or any at all. The solution is to check the unit’s drainage system.
  • You’ll need to clean the drain lines. This needs to be done as quickly as possible because clogged AC drains can force water back up, resulting in major problems such as water damage within your home.
  • Fortunately, it’s a job that a seasoned HVAC contractor can handle within a short time.

3) Dirty filter

Notes:

  • One of the common problems with HVAC involves dirty filters. When filters aren’t clogged, airflow doesn’t flow freely through the filter. That makes your AC unit less efficient and, consequently, your home less cool.
  • The solution, in this case, is simple. Get a new filter and replace the current one. A new filter helps your AC unit work better and results in cleaner, fresher, indoor air.
  • For people in relatively hot areas who use air conditioners more, filters need to be changed every 30 to 60 days.

4) Sensors problems

Notes:

  • If you’ve checked the drains and the filter, but your HVAC is still not blowing cold air, chances are there could be a problem with the sensor. Check whether the component is in the right position and whether the wires are attached correctly.
  • In case the sensor has moved, try to return it to its rightful spot. Where the wires are messed up, reattach them carefully. In case any of these solutions don’t work, call an expert right away.

5) Leaking or low refrigerant

Notes:

  • Low air refrigerant levels are another of the common air conditioner problems. Air conditioners perform less efficiently when it doesn’t have enough refrigerant. You’ll notice that the air coming from the unit is warmer than usual.
  • Another sign that refrigerant may be leaking from your system is if there’s condensation around your furnace. You may also notice ice build-up on the copper lines running from the AC or an unusually high energy bill.
  • You can’t fix this issue on your own, unfortunately. Only a seasoned contractor can repair leaks, recharge the entire system, and test refrigerant levels to make sure that your unit is functioning properly once again.

6) Problematic thermostat

Notes:

  • Sometimes, your AC is running, but your home still feels like an arid wasteland. The problem, in this case, could be your thermostat. If your thermostat is at 65, but the temperature inside your home feels more like 120, then chances are the thermostat has a problem.
  • Try to reset the thermostat again. If the component still doesn’t read the right temperature, then you need professional help. Call a technician to check out the thermostat and determine why it isn’t working.

7) Electrical control failure

Notes:

  • Does your AC turn on and off frequently? It’s one of the common problems with AC units. The issue here may be electrical control failure.
  • Start by checking the breaker switch to make sure it hasn’t tripped. If it has, then the simple solution is to flip it back to get your AC system working once again.
  • But if the switch hasn’t tripped, then you’ll need professional help. Have a technician check the electrical connections to see where the problem lies.

8) Dead thermostat

Notes:

  • The problem may be bigger than a defective thermostat. It could be that the thermostat is dead and needs replacement.
  • Before buying a new thermostat, however, try replacing the batteries. If the thermostat still won’t work, it’s probably time to get a new one altogether.

9) Unusal noises

Notes:

  • While most furnaces produce some sound as part of normal operation, some unusual sounds may indicate that something is wrong with the unit. If you hear whining or squealing, it could mean that the bearings in the inducer motor or blower motor are failing.
  • The solution, in this case, is to get the motor replaced to avert furnace failure. Dirty burners and airflow problems may also produce some of these noises. Either way, you should never ignore these noises.

  • YOU CAN TROUBLESHOOT THE MOST COMMON HVAC PROBLEMS

As you can see, there are many problems that can assail your HVAC. The good news is that the most common HVAC problems have relatively simple solutions, some of which you can provide on your own. Where you run into problems, call an experienced HVAC expert to help you out.
