Gaining access regardless your circumstances

Notes:

  • Unfortunately some of your family members may lose mobility – unable to climb the steps of a porch or back deck or home area.
  • They may be bound to a wheelchair or other handicap device to help in their transport.
  • That is where a handicap or wheelchair ramp comes in – something that may be mobile or permanent – connecting the home to the street.
  • These ramps need to be wide enough – especially around corners – for easy mobility of the wheelchair or handicap device.

For those who may have some mobility

Notes:

  • The ramp may be a simple set-up that doesn’t reguire much space or elongated slope.
  • It is the perfect setup for partially handicap persons or others who find it difficult to use stairs.
  • There are also mobile ramps that can be used temporarily until the person gains stregth us climb stairs again.

Intigrating the ramp into your landscape

Notes:

  • Wheelchair ramps are a bit different than handicap ramps.
  • The slope must be longer to allow the wheelchair to descend slowly – and the width, expecially around corners must be wider to allow the wheelchair to make an easy turn.
  • This is when you use ramp designs that can fit into your landscape design giving the ramp a natural look to the house.

For those who want to keep it simple

Notes:

  • A large, integrated wheelchair ramp into the home and landscape may be too much for some – again, depending on their situation.
  • The wheelchair bound may be something temporary – so a simple ramp up the porch stairs may be all that is needed.
  • Our only caution is the lack of safety rails – any slip could be disasterous if the wheelbound-chair person attempts the climb or descend on their own without anyone present.

Commercial ramp

Notes:

  • Many commerical operatins – such as this pool club – are building access ramps to meet ADA requirements.
  • Again, some ideas to consider when a ramp of this nature needs to something for home access.
  • If it is going to be permanent, consider how to use landscaping to make the ramp decorative and functional.
