The start of a great sacrifice

Notes:

  • Today we honor our veterans who sacrificed much in the defense of our freedoms and lives.
  • Let’s dedicate this post to the World War II veterans whose numbers are few as many of these vets reach to the end of life.
  • They are often referred to as the greatest generation – because of the depth and brutality of the war and the prior hardship of the Great Depression.
  • It all started for them on the Day of Infamy December 07, 1941 – the Sunday morning when Japan strikes Pearl Harbor.

Normandy Beach – looks peaceful today …

Notes:

  • … but not on that morning in early June, 1944.
  • The beach was littered with thousands of soldiers storming the beach to gain a foothold in occupied Nazi Europe.
  • The view is from an German bunker where machine guns mowed down solders by the hundreds as they attempted to secure the beach.

On the other side of the world

Notes:

  • World War II was fought on two major fronts – the European Front and the Pacific Front.
  • This the Island of Iwo Jima (Pacific Front) – often referred to as the Island of death.
  • The hill at the foot of the Island is where US Marines hoisted the famous scene of the American flag.

The Battle of Bulge

Notes:

  • Winter 1944-45 – this road was covered with tanks and foot soldiers as they stopped and pushed back the last German offensive of the war.
  • The offensive caught the Allied forces by surprise – trapping and surrounding a full regiment of American soldiers behind enemy lines.
  • It was within the confines of these woods that the most intense fighting among tanks and soldiers for the survival of freedom.

The war coming to an end

Notes:

  • The final push into Berlin that began the capitulation of Nazi Germany.
  • The most costly and bloodiest war in history is finally coming to an end for those US men and women who sacrificed much.
  • But wait – there is still another war on the other side of the world that will continue for another 3 months.

The final end

Notes:

  • World War II finally comes to the end with the unconditional surrender of Japan.
  • It unfortunately took the dropping of the two atomic bombs that brought the Japanese to surrendering terms.
  • These two bombs – although controversial – saved thousands of American lives from storming the beachhead of Japan.
  • The war has ended – and we honor those men and women who sacrificed much in the name of freedom and the pursuit of happiness.
